Your wedding is a personal event and the wedding invitation should be just as personal. You are announcing to the world that you are marrying the person of your dreams and your voice should be heard in describing how important the event is. Announcing to your friends and family can be done creatively and uniquely.
Items to Include on Wedding Invitations
1. The first thing to include on the wedding invitation is who is announcing the event. Are the couple’s parents or the bride and groom announcing the wedding?
2. A formal or less formal tone may be included on the invitation. A casual phrase, such as ‘please join us’ or a more formal tone such as ‘Mr. and Mrs. X request the honor of your presence.’ If the ceremony will take place in a church or place of worship then the tone should be formal and less casual.
3. The full name of the bride and groom should be printed on the invitation. The bride’s name should be listed first and include her middle name, while the groom’s name should be listed second and also include his middle name.
4. The date of the event should be written or printed out, such as Friday, the tenth of June. The time of the event can also be written out, such as ‘two o’clock.’
5. The location of the event and the full address should be included in the invitation. A map may also be included if most people are unfamiliar with the area. The map should be separate and enclosed with the invitation.
6. A self-addressed, stamped return envelope housing the reply card should be included in the wedding invitation package sent to guests. It is customary to include a stamp on the envelope so that the guests do not have to pay to reply.
Tips for Wedding Invitations
· When designing wedding invitations for a small and informal affair, handwritten invites are customary. There is no need for engraving, but it can be done if you prefer.
· The guest’s full names should be included on the envelope. It is important to avoid impersonal terms such as nicknames or ‘and family.’
· Make sure your invitations are sent out at least six weeks in advance to allow your guests to make arrangements, especially those who are traveling from out of town.
· Bridal invitations should be addressed with a stationary pen if not pre-printed. The handwriting should be elegant or written nicely so that the print matches the design of the invitation.
· Remember to keep things organized as the wedding replies arrive in the mail. Losing a batch is not helpful when reporting numbers to the caterers.
