Garters


Traditionally brides remove the garter off at the wedding reception and throw it to the single male guests. The male who catches it supposed to be the next man who will marry.

The tradition of brides throwing their bridal garters is said to date back to 14th century England, when wedding guests believed owning a piece of the bride’s wedding dress would bring good luck. A bride would often be assailed at the altar by hordes of guests competing for the prize and her dress was sometimes torn to shreds. To keep the dress (and themselves) intact, brides began throwing their bridal garters to their male guests. Sometimes the men would become rowdy and attempt to remove the garter from the bride themselves, and so it became custom for the groom to remove the bridal garter from his bride’s leg and throw it himself.
