Bridesmaids

It's easier (although not essential) to have the same number of bridesmaids as you have groomsmen.

Duties include;

Before the wedding....

helping to organise appointments for dress fittings, manicures, hairdressers etc.
helping to organise (and attending) the shower teas and hens party.

At the ceremony...

walking in the bridal procession down the aisle and standing next to the bride during the ceremony.

At the reception...

sit at the bridal table alternately with the groomsmen
mingle and dance with guests
